About this film

On Jatar, a struggling punch-burn laborer signs onto a hazard crew that extracts psychoactive sap from an alien forest. The job turns a living ecosystem into a resource and exposes workers to a substance capable of altering perception, memory, and agency. When the trees begin to whisper, the laborer is drawn beyond the controlled harvesting zone and deeper into the woods.

There he is consumed by the forest’s memories. He witnesses ancient humans arrive on a barren world, terraform it into a paradise, and construct an ecosystem meant to sustain their ambitions. That achievement becomes their extinction: the biosphere they engineered ultimately destroys the species that believed it had mastered nature. The vision is not delivered as detached history but as an experience imposed upon, or absorbed into, the worker’s consciousness.

Set between the Eleventh and Twelfth Cycles of the larger Thirteen Cycles of Humanity, Woodnuts fuses cosmic and ecological horror. Jatar is simultaneously a human creation, a planetary grave, and a living archive. The laborer’s economic desperation brings him into a system repeating the old mistake: treating an ancient intelligence as extractable material without understanding what remembers beneath the bark.

Synopsis

Desperate for credits, a punch-burn laborer joins a hazard crew extracting psychoactive sap from the forests of Jatar. When the trees begin to whisper, he is drawn into the woods and absorbed by ancient memories: humans transformed a barren planet into paradise, but the engineered ecosystem ultimately destroyed its own creators.

Complete Description with Spoilers

On Jatar, work and survival are governed by a credit system. With few economic alternatives, a punch-burn laborer joins a hazard crew assigned to extract psychoactive sap from alien trees. The substance makes the forest valuable, but it also exposes the workers to an environment capable of altering perception, memory, and will.

The first signs of danger arrive as whispers. The trees seem to call the protagonist away from the work zone and into the ancient forest. Their attraction is not merely physical. As he advances, he is consumed by the ecosystem's own memories. His consciousness witnesses a planetary past in which ancestral humans reached an originally barren world and terraformed it into a paradise.

That human achievement contained the conditions of its own ruin. The biosphere designed and manipulated to serve the species evolved, reacted, or exceeded its makers until it destroyed the humanity that had created it. The contemporary worker does not receive this history as a neutral archive. Under the influence of the sap and the forest's call, he experiences it from within and becomes another mind incorporated into its living memory.

Woodnuts is set between the Eleventh and Twelfth Cycles of the larger Thirteen Cycles of Humanity project. It combines cosmic horror with ecological horror, presenting nature not as a passive setting or simple monster but as a temporal intelligence that outlived its engineers and preserved evidence of their arrogance. The known arc moves from the economic exploitation of the forest to the revelation that Jatar is simultaneously humanity's creation, grave, and living archive.
