With Earth choking on microplastics, a scientist and her dog Milo search distant planets for a plant that can break plastic down. After years of failed samples, Milo notices that the answer is not the species the mission expected, but an overlooked organism that actually feeds on the waste.

About this film

Microplastic pollution has become an existential threat, and a scientist travels from world to world with her dog, Milo, searching for a plant capable of breaking plastic down. The mission is governed by a precise hypothesis: find the right botanical specimen, bring its mechanism home, and give Earth a biological route out of the crisis. For 1,898 days, samples fail while the planet’s prospects continue to deteriorate.

The breakthrough comes not from another perfectly planned test but from Milo’s unstructured attention. He detects an organism the scientist initially overlooks because it is not the plant she has been trained to find. What matters is its behavior: it consumes or decomposes plastic. The discovery exposes the mission’s central blind spot and reframes scientific hope as an act of humility. Nature does not deliver the answer in the category humanity prescribed; survival becomes possible when the researcher recognizes a living solution on its own terms.

Synopsis

With Earth suffocating under microplastics, a scientist and her dog Milo cross distant planets in search of a plant capable of decomposing the material. After years of failure, Milo notices that the solution is not the species the mission expected, but an unfamiliar organism that feeds on plastic, proving that survival will require observing life without forcing predetermined answers onto it.

Complete Description with Spoilers

In a future where microplastics have ceased to be invisible pollution and now directly threaten the continuity of life, a scientist leaves Earth with her dog, Milo, on an interplanetary mission. Their objective is to find a plant capable of decomposing plastic and provide the planet with a biological way out of the crisis. The journey becomes an obsessive search. Samples are collected on distant worlds, tested, and discarded while time runs out at home.

The research continues for 1,898 days without producing the expected result. The repeated failures reveal a limitation in the project itself. Everyone is looking specifically for a plant and judging nature through that hypothesis. Milo, whose curiosity does not follow scientific protocol, notices something the scientist has overlooked. The organism does not belong to the expected category, but it has the decisive property: it consumes or breaks down plastic.

The discovery changes the meaning of the title. The roots of tomorrow are not necessarily the literal roots of the species humans imagined, but the willingness to recognize a solution in an unexpected form of life. Milo does not replace science. He breaks the bias that had narrowed it. The ending restores hope to the mission and turns the relationship among the scientist, her animal companion, and alien ecosystems into a defense of observation, humility, and cooperation. A crisis produced by human choices becomes survivable only when the protagonist stops asking whether nature confirms her plan and begins seeing what it actually offers.

Narrative Sequence

  1. Earth faces an existential crisis caused by accumulating microplastics.
  2. A scientist travels with her dog Milo across distant planets in search of a plant that can decompose plastic.
  3. They collect and test one sample after another without success.
  4. The mission reaches day 1,898 as Earth's infrastructure and future become increasingly precarious.
  5. Milo discovers an organism that falls outside the search criteria.
  6. The scientist realizes that it is not the expected plant, but it consumes plastic and opens an unexpected path toward a solution.
